Be like a soldier, he chided himself. They never had any idea what I was capable of.
Now I am showing them.
But then, within the small intimate setting of a stairwell, the current harshness of his militant training kicked in. He felt that even Jo was a part of something that he despised.
He was so serious it caused a chilled wave to run through her entire body. Yet Jo’s naturally fearless character moved through it as she examined the facial features of her executioner. She saw the anger, the horror, and the sadness — she saw it all shouting out to her without words. This boy desperately needs a hug. No one ever taught him how to ask, did they?
The sound and the feeling took her together as one. A sharp discomfort was driven into the center of her belly. Jo staggered backward, still staring at the young boy holding a powerful weapon — brimming with swirls of smoke. Slowly, she felt her body take a seat on the floor. She sat there for what felt like a very long time — her back against the wall, head tilted to the side. The pain made her body scream with agonizing fear. She…
