Peter saw his sister as ferocious in both her actions and opinions. He taught her many things, but there was no doubt that the flow of learning moved in both directions. Peter heard some of his friends talking about their annoying little sisters and wondered why he didn’t feel the same way. In fact, Jo was his favorite person.

Like most kids, the two of them did not particularly love school. Getting decent enough grades wasn’t difficult, but neither put forth much more than a fraction of their creative potential. When the bell rang, they’d rush home to create their own schedule.

Being raised by a single father may have altered their experience, but they never felt deprived. Daniel only instituted two major rules: Take turns making decisions and be kind. The first rule manifested itself into the ownership of days. Each family member took a turn at being the leader. Mondays and Wednesdays were Peter’s, Thursdays and Fridays were Jo’s, Tuesday was spent solo, and Saturdays and Sundays were Daniel’s. All family members could of course trade any days they liked in a given week.
